Calhoun County, AL – A lifelong resident of Alexandria, Tobi Burt says his campaign for the Calhoun County Commission is rooted in decades of public service, infrastructure experience, and a commitment to what he calls “building a better tomorrow” for the communities he has long served.
Burt, owner of B&B Developers, LLC since 1999, has spent much of his professional career working on infrastructure and development projects throughout Calhoun County. His portfolio includes roadwork, commercial development, and municipal infrastructure projects in Alexandria, Anniston, Weaver, and surrounding areas.
Among the projects Burt referenced are development work near the Foodland and Jack’s area on Big Valley Drive in Alexandria, projects near Raceway at Highway 431 and Gate 5, and infrastructure improvements including the walking trail connecting Anniston’s 4th Street to Michael Tucker Park in Weaver.
“That’s what I do every day,” Burt said. “I build roads, bridges, and infrastructure. I understand how projects move from planning to completion, and I understand the responsibility that comes with managing taxpayer dollars.”
Burt currently serves in his 14th year on the Calhoun County Board of Education, including six years as chairman. During that time, he says he has helped oversee million-dollar budgets, manage employees, and make long-term decisions affecting schools, staff, and students across the county.
“As an elected official for nearly two decades, I have helped balance million-dollar budgets and oversee employees,” Burt said. “I’m not new to the type of responsibilities handled by the Calhoun County Commission. Many of those experiences are very similar to the work I’ve already done as a school board member.”
Burt emphasized that his decision to seek a Commission seat is not about leaving behind his role in education but expanding how he serves the county.
“I love being a school board member,” Burt said. “This is simply an opportunity to serve on a larger scale and in a different capacity.”
Throughout his time on the school board, Burt says he has donated his board salary back to the school system and established the Tobi Burt Career Ready Scholarship, which provides at least one $1,000 scholarship annually to each high school in the county system. According to Burt, more than $100,000 in scholarships have been awarded to local students through the program.
“Any investment we make in children is an investment in the future of Calhoun County,” Burt said. “Those students grow up to become the workforce, business owners, and leaders who keep this county moving forward.”
Burt also pointed to his years of involvement with local boards, volunteer organizations, and community partnerships, including work with local water boards, volunteer fire department boards, and leadership within ALEAF — the Alabama Law Enforcement Appreciation Foundation.
“As a business owner, school board member, and someone who has served this community for decades, I’ve been building both literal and figurative bridges for Calhoun County for a long time,” Burt said. “We need leadership willing to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty. Photo opportunities are great, but they don’t get projects completed.”
Burt said he believes leadership should be measured through consistent action rather than campaign appearances alone.
“I’m here to be boots on the ground and get things done — not just at election time, but from day one to the last day I serve,” Burt said. “That’s how I’ve lived my life. I’m going to be the same Tobi Burt I was before announcing this campaign, whether I win or lose. I love Calhoun County, and I love the people here.”
Burt describes himself as someone focused on action over presentation.
“I’m about doing, not just saying,” Burt said. “I would much rather people experience that I follow through and do what I say I’m going to do than simply hear carefully crafted words or see a nice picture.”
If elected, Burt said strengthening oversight, accountability, infrastructure planning, and support for county services would be among his priorities. He also stressed the importance of continuing to invest in healthcare access, EMS services, and public safety partnerships throughout both urban and rural communities.
“We can’t allow smaller communities to be overlooked,” Burt said. “Expanding healthcare access, strengthening mental health services, and supporting our EMS providers and first responders is critical. They are partners in serving this county.”
For Burt, the campaign ultimately comes back to community.
“This is home,” he said. “Everything I’ve built professionally and personally has been here. Serving on the Commission would simply be another way to continue giving back to the county that’s given so much to me.”
