Oxford Library Receives Grant to Expand Access to Popular Digital Titles

OXFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY GRANT TO EXPAND DIGITAL SERVIC

OXFORD, AL — The Oxford Public Library has received a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to purchase additional copies of some of the most-requested digital titles available through CamelliaNet, Alabama’s statewide library consortium.

Oxford Public Library is one of 105 Alabama libraries participating in CamelliaNet, a consortium that provides access to downloadable e-books and audiobooks for library patrons across the state. Through the shared collection, member libraries offer digital materials for readers and listeners of all ages while pooling resources to expand access and reduce costs.

According to library officials, the grant will be used to increase the number of available copies of titles that currently have long wait lists. The goal is to reduce hold times and improve access to digital materials for patrons throughout Alabama.

“The goal of this grant is to enrich the electronic collections of consortium libraries statewide, thereby enhancing library programs, collections, and services,” said Amy Henderson, director of the Oxford Public Library. “Also, electronic collection support reinforces literacy resources among all demographics. Member libraries can be available 24/7 to their patrons, regardless of the patrons’ location as long as they have internet access.”

Digital collections provide an alternative and often more accessible option for library users. Features such as adjustable text sizes and customizable audiobook playback speeds can help individuals with disabilities access library resources more easily.

Usage of CamelliaNet’s digital collection has continued to grow in recent years. The consortium recorded 889,060 checkouts in 2022, 937,385 in 2023, and 956,993 in 2024. As circulation has increased, so have wait times for popular titles.

Library officials said the grant is intended to address those growing demands by purchasing additional copies of high-demand e-books and audiobooks, allowing patrons to access materials more quickly.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services serves as the primary source of federal support for libraries and museums across the United States, providing grants, research, and policy development to strengthen access to educational and cultural resources.

The grant is expected to benefit library users throughout Alabama by improving access to digital reading and listening materials while reducing wait times for some of the most sought-after titles in the CamelliaNet collection.
