Piedmont, AL – A shooting at the MAPCO convenience store on U.S. Highway 278 East in Piedmont on Monday morning has been ruled accidental following an investigation by the Piedmont Police Department.
According to Piedmont Police Chief Nathan Johnson, officers, along with the Piedmont Fire Department and Piedmont Rescue Squad, responded to the business at approximately 11 a.m. on July 20 after receiving a report of an accidental shooting.
When officers arrived, they found 18-year-old Elijah Young suffering from a gunshot wound to his left leg.
Before first responders reached the scene, several bystanders provided emergency assistance. Among them was an off-duty Anniston Police Department officer who used a belt as a makeshift tourniquet to help control the bleeding until emergency medical personnel arrived. Police said the actions of the bystanders and the off-duty officer helped stabilize Young before he was treated by Piedmont Fire and Rescue personnel.
Young was later airlifted to receive additional medical treatment.
A preliminary investigation determined the shooting occurred as a result of the negligent handling of a firearm inside Young’s vehicle. The firearm was recovered and secured as evidence.
Police said no criminal charges are anticipated, and the investigation has been completed with the incident officially ruled an accidental shooting.
Chief Johnson said the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible firearm handling.
“Every firearm should be treated as if it is loaded, kept pointed in a safe direction, and never handled carelessly or as a toy,” Johnson said. “A moment of negligence can have life-changing consequences.”
Johnson also commended those who assisted before emergency crews arrived, particularly the off-duty Anniston police officer, for providing lifesaving care during the critical moments after the shooting.
According to the family, the latest reports indicate Young is expected to recover.
