Calhoun County, AL – The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating recent property crimes and is calling on the public for help. By encouraging community involvement, the Sheriff’s Office hopes to improve public safety and hold those accountable for these criminal activities.
Property Crime: On July 29, a local man was scammed out of $5,000 after a caller posing as “Deputy Williams” claimed there was a warrant for his arrest and needed to pay immediately. The scammer sent fake documents, a QR code, and detailed instructions that convinced the victim the threat was real. He was directed to use a so‑called “Federal Payment System” at Liquor Kings, which was actually a bitcoin machine. After sending the money and scanning his driver’s license, the victim was told to meet the suspect at the sheriff’s office. When no one appeared, he realized it was a scam and contacted dispatch.
Crime of the Week: On July 21, deputies were searching the Alexandria community after receiving information about a possible stolen truck. After locating an orange Peterbilt near U.S. 431 and Post Oak Road, dispatch confirmed through the tag number that the vehicle matched the description of a truck that was reported stolen out of Randolph County. The driver, Robert Branham, stepped out and immediately asked, “Is this about the truck?” before claiming he had a lien due to unpaid repair work. After dispatch reconfirmed the stolen status, deputies detained Branham and arrested him for Receiving Stolen Property, First Degree. The truck was released to Matthew’s Towing, and Branham was transported to jail on a $20,000 bond.
