ANNISTON, AL — Members of the Anniston Museum of Natural History gathered Thursday evening, Sept. 3, for “Night Shift: Senses in the Shadows,” a members-only event focused on the ways animals experience and navigate the world after dark.
The evening event, held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the museum, combined educational displays, refreshments and opportunities for guests to learn more about nocturnal animals and the adaptations that allow them to function in low-light environments.
Museum staff used the program to explore how animals rely on senses beyond vision, including hearing, smell and touch, to find food, avoid predators and move through their surroundings at night. Guests were able to examine displays and learn about the specialized features different species use to survive after sunset.
A live animal presentation was held during the event, giving attendees an opportunity to see several of the museum’s animal ambassadors up close. Museum educators introduced the animals, shared their names and species and discussed characteristics that help them interact with their environments. The presentation also allowed guests to learn more about the animals’ behaviors, natural habitats and sensory adaptations.
The live program complemented the evening’s broader theme by providing examples of how different species have developed unique ways of sensing the world around them.
Light hors d’oeuvres were also served during the event as members explored the museum and its displays.
“Night Shift: Senses in the Shadows” was presented as a member event at the Anniston Museum of Natural History and offered participants an after-hours opportunity to experience the museum while learning more about wildlife and the natural world.
