FORT PAYNE, AL — Jacksonville State University’s Field School will offer a Woven Reed Footstool Workshop on Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at JSU’s Little River Canyon Center in Fort Payne. The hands-on class will introduce participants to traditional chair seat weaving techniques while they create a small footstool.
During the workshop, participants will learn to weave a simple pattern using flat reed, including the herringbone pattern. Small stool frames, tools and all supplies needed to complete the project will be provided. The finished stool will have a seat measuring approximately 16 by 13 inches and a height of 13 inches.
Chair seat weaving and caning are centuries-old crafts that continue to be practiced today. The workshop is designed to provide an introduction to the craft through a practical project using common hand tools.
The class is open to ages 12 through adult. Younger children are not permitted for safety reasons, and participants should have moderate hand strength because the workshop emphasizes hand-tool use. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable, casual clothing that can get messy and may bring a sack lunch.
The supply fee is $150, and space is limited to five participants. Pre-registration is required. The event listing identifies the workshop as taking place Sunday, but does not specify the calendar date; prospective attendees should confirm the date when registering.
