Oxford, AL — The Oxford City Council approved the city’s fiscal year 2027 budget, authorized a nearly $3 million synthetic turf project at the Oxford Softball Complex and addressed several infrastructure projects during its Tuesday, Sept. 22 meeting.
The meeting also included recognition of two promotions within the Oxford Police Department. Officers Brian Norton and Justin Austin were promoted to the rank of sergeant.
The council unanimously approved its consent agenda, which included six resolutions.
Resolution No. 2026-80 approved the city’s fiscal year 2027 budget.
The council also approved Resolution No. 2026-81, authorizing the mayor to enter into an agreement with the East Alabama Regional Planning Commission for a comprehensive mapping program for fiscal year 2027.
One of the largest expenditures considered during the meeting involved improvements at the Oxford Softball Complex at Oxford Lake. Resolution No. 2026-82 authorized the mayor to enter into a $2,928,309 construction agreement with Gameday Athletic Surfaces for the synthetic turf conversion of four athletic fields at the complex.
Council members also approved Resolution No. 2026-83, authorizing an amended agreement with Atlas Technical Consultants for right-of-way acquisition services associated with the Airport Road bridge replacement at Coldwater Creek.
Resolution No. 2026-84 declared certain city vehicles and equipment surplus and authorized their sale or disposal.
The council additionally approved Resolution No. 2026-85, authorizing an amended agreement with Three Notch Group for additional professional engineering services associated with right-of-way acquisition assistance for Phase I of the Friendship Road widening and bridge replacement project. The additional services total $68,024.
The council also scheduled two public hearings for its Oct. 13 meeting involving proposed zoning changes previously considered by the Oxford Planning Commission.
Fresh Start Homes, through Chris Lindsey, is requesting that property at 3985 Bynum Boulevard be rezoned from Residential 1 District (R-1) to Light Manufacturing District (M-1).
Jeffrey and Stephanie Hornsby are requesting that properties at 414 and 423 Beck Road be rezoned from General Business District (GB) to Agricultural District (AG). Both requests were considered by the Oxford Planning Commission during its Sept. 1 meeting.
The Oxford City Council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Oct. 13.
