ANNISTON, AL — Public libraries across Calhoun County received new books Thursday, Sept. 24, as part of an America250AL grant project organized in recognition of the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The Calhoun County America 250 Alabama Committee hosted the book presentation at the Calhoun County Area Chamber & Visitors Center, bringing together librarians, local officials and community representatives. The grant was secured through a partnership involving the Calhoun County Commission and Chamber.

The project, called “Project Impact 250,” grew out of planning that began during a Feb. 6 meeting of the local America 250 committee. Organizers said the goal was to use available state grant funding for a project that could reach communities throughout Calhoun County.

Libraries serving Anniston, Hobson City, Jacksonville, Ohatchee, Oxford, Piedmont and Weaver each received eight physical books. The books are also available electronically through a statewide e-reader consortium, extending access beyond the physical copies distributed Thursday.

State Sen. Keith Kelley spoke during the presentation and thanked the Chamber and County Commission for pursuing the grant. Kelley also discussed the role reading played in his own life and thanked local librarians for their work with children and other members of their communities.

Each donated book includes a commemorative bookplate carrying the message, “Inspire, Learn, and Grow,” along with a message encouraging curiosity, imagination and community connection.

In addition to the books, each participating library received 500 America 250 bookmarks. Organizers said libraries may distribute the bookmarks within their communities, including through local schools.

The Calhoun County Commission said the project is intended to provide a long-term resource for families, students and other residents interested in learning more about American history.

Thursday’s presentation is one of several local activities planned in connection with America 250. Organizers also announced plans for a countywide “Calhoun County Cares” service project on Nov. 13, with individual municipalities and organizations expected to select projects suited to their communities.
