CALHOUN COUNTY, AL — Following a fifth episode filled with difficult challenges, strategic decisions and a controversial moment inside an Albanian bunker, The Amazing Race Season 39 contestants Daisha and Dalton sat down to share their experiences exclusively with Calhoun Journal readers.
The pair discussed the challenges they faced during the episode, what viewers did not see on television and the decision that sparked discussion among fans of the competition series.
Their firsthand account offers additional context about how events unfolded and the circumstances surrounding one of the episode’s most talked-about moments.
A Challenging Leg in Albania
Episode 5 took contestants to Tirana, Albania, where teams faced their first self-driving leg of the race, including the challenge of operating a vehicle with a manual transmission.
Dalton took responsibility for driving while Daisha navigated using a large map. Rain added another complication, making the map wet and more difficult to manage.
The teams then faced a series of physically and mentally demanding tasks.
One challenge involved crushing grapes, with Dalton assigned approximately 75 pounds. He described the experience as physically exhausting, particularly because of the heat, humidity and slippery conditions.
The next challenge required preparing traditional pastries, with Dalton responsible for completing 16.
While the televised episode showed some of his difficulties, Dalton explained that the task took considerably longer than viewers may have realized.
According to the pair, they spent approximately two and a half hours at the pastry challenge. Dalton said the broadcast showed only one of several times his work was rejected by the judge.
Despite the setbacks, the team completed the challenge and continued racing.
The Bunker Challenge and Controversial Decision
The most discussed moment of the episode occurred at Bunk’Art, where teams entered a bunker and worked to decipher a message hidden within an audio recording.
The challenge required contestants to identify every seventh word in the recording and use the information to determine a code.
Daisha and Dalton initially struggled to solve the puzzle.
While working through the challenge, they encountered fellow contestants Anne-Marie and Riley, who were also attempting to decipher the message.
Daisha explained that the teams compared their lists of words to determine whether they had identified the same information.
During that exchange, Anne-Marie and Riley clarified that the phrase “no one” should be treated as two separate words rather than one.
That clarification helped Daisha and Dalton confirm their list.
Daisha subsequently recognized that the first letters of the words revealed the answer to the puzzle.
She then proceeded to provide the answer and move forward in the race without returning to share the completed solution with Anne-Marie and Riley.
The decision generated controversy among some viewers, raising questions about cooperation and competition during the challenge.
Daisha Explains Her Decision
Speaking exclusively with Calhoun Journal, Daisha acknowledged that the other team had provided information that helped them complete the puzzle.
She also explained that the interaction was limited to that particular challenge rather than part of an ongoing alliance.
“That is the truth,” Daisha said, acknowledging the assistance. “But here’s the thing: we hadn’t been working with them the whole race. This was one little thing.”
Daisha described the decision as one she made in the moment, while balancing the competitive nature of the race with the assistance the other contestants had provided.
She explained that she recognized the solution and chose to continue rather than return to give the other team the answer.
“In the moment, I made that decision to leave. And I stand by it. It’s a race. It’s a game,” Daisha said.
She added that the competition ultimately requires teams to make decisions that affect their own progress.
“It’s a competition at the end of the day,” she said.
Her explanation provides additional context for viewers who saw the interaction during the broadcast but did not hear the team’s full perspective on the decision.
The situation also illustrates a recurring element of competitive reality television, where contestants must decide when to cooperate with other teams and when to prioritize their own advancement.
A Second-Place Finish
Despite the challenges earlier in the leg, Daisha and Dalton finished Episode 5 in second place.
The result represented progress for the pair, who said they had struggled during earlier portions of the competition.
Dalton expressed excitement about the finish and the team’s improvement.
“We got so excited that we got number two for this leg of the race because from the very beginning, we’ve been struggling and we’re slowly making our way up,” he said.
The finish allowed the team to continue in the competition and marked one of their strongest performances through the first five episodes.
