Oxford, AL November 6, 2021 –The Parkinson’s Foundation (PF) will host the first annual Moving Day Community Walk for Northeast Alabama, A Walk for Parkinson’s, at Oxford Lake’s Walking Track, one of more than sixty grassroots events taking place across the country this year. Funds raised through Moving Day will support cutting- edge research and community programs to improve the lives of people with Parkinson’s disease and their families. The event will start at 9:00 a.m.

One million Americans are living with Parkinson’s, with 60,000 people newly diagnosed each year. Moving Day Northeast Alabama is a fun and inspiring fundraising event that unites the community in the fight against Parkinson’s. Moving Day events across the country have raised nearly $40 million dollars to improve care and advance research toward a cure.

“A lot of things got postponed this past year, but Parkinson’s Disease has not been postponed, our Parkinson’s community still needs a voice, awareness and support” said Stacey Faber of the Parkinson’s Foundation. “We realize this year will look different than others, but we have taken steps to make this socially distanced event safe and something for the community to look forward to!”

More than just a walk, Moving Day Northeast Alabama is a celebration of movement and exercise—proven to help manage Parkinson’s symptoms.

Funds raised through Moving Day support the Parkinson’s Foundation mission by: delivering quality care to more than 193,500 people living with Parkinson’s; funding cutting-edge research to advance toward a cure; providing free resources and local services for people living with Parkinson’s and their families. The funds raised also support community grants in Alabama which is currently an “underserved area”, meaning there are a vast and growing number of Parkinson’s Diagnoses in the State and currently not enough programs to assist these patients.

About Parkinson’s Disease

Affecting an estimated one million Americans and 10 million worldwide, Parkinson’s disease is the second-most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s and is the 14th-leading cause of death in the United States. It is associated with a progressive loss of motor control (e.g., shaking or tremor at rest and lack of facial expression), as well as non-motor symptoms (e.g., depression and anxiety). There is no cure for Parkinson’s and 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the United States alone.
