Oxford’s Whitfield goes for triple-double as Oxford wraps up regular season with 21st win;McDaniel has big double-double in Cleburne County victory

SCOTTSBORO – The Oxford girls basketball team has been making huge strides the last couple of years of coach Melissa Bennett’s tenure and Thursday night pulled off the biggest individual accomplishment of all.
Xai Whitfield scored the first triple-double in in Bennett’s tenure when she went for 28 points, 10 rebounds and 11 steals in the Lady Jackets’ 64-54 win over Scottsboro to wrap up the regular season.
“We knew she was close (to a triple-double),” Bennett said. “Honestly, I was more focused on the amount of turnovers we and she had; always a coach.
“It just shows how athletic she is. She is a lady of very few words, but when those lights come on she makes things happen.”
Whitfield scored 17 in the second half as the Lady Jackets (21-4), No. 16 in the MaxPreps Alabama rankings and fifth in 6A, extended a four-point halftime lead.
Justice Woods and LaMya McGrue had 11 and 10, respectively. They each scored five in the second quarter as the Lady Jackets went on an 18-10 tear to recover from an early deficit.

GLENCOE 50, PIEDMONT 46: The Lady Bulldogs went cold at a critical point in the game and although fought back, they fell just short.
The game was tied at 33 with 3:15 left in the third quarter when Piedmont went cold. The Lady Bulldogs hit only one of their next 14 shots and Glencoe went on an 11-2 run to take a nine-point lead with 4:32 to play.
But Piedmont rallied behind Ava Pope and got to within two twice, the last time on Pope’s short jumper with seven seconds left. Glencoe threw a long pass similar to the one that had just set up Pope and Madalyn Amberson dropped it in right before the horn for the final margin.
Amberson led Glencoe with 19 points. Piedmont’s Pope led all scorers with 21.

McDaniel scored 11 points in the first quarter as the Lady Tigers took an 18-12 lead and had 10 in the second as they extended the lead to 17 at halftime.
Hailey Price came off the injured list to make a brief Senior Night appearance. She started and took two quick shots on the opening possession, hitting the second for a 3-pointer, then called it a high school career. A lasting memory.
