Piedmont, AL – As an update to our original article the Piedmont Police Department has released the following update:
On May 20, 2022 at approximately 4:46pm the Piedmont Police Department was dispatched to a vehicle crash involving a white F250 Super duty truck hitting a vehicle, pedestrian on a bicycle, and then crashed into Noble Bank on Main St in Piedmont. As officers arrived at the scene, a male pedestrian was on the ground in front of the bank. The victim, identified as Thomas Wayne Benefield age 27, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the F250, identified as Rory One Calhoun was transported to the hospital in Etowah County. Once Mr. Calhoun was checked and released from the hospital, he was arrested for Criminal Negligent Homicide DUI pending additional charges. He was transported to the Piedmont City Jail awaiting transport to the Calhoun County Jail where bonds will be set. The Piedmont Police Department and myself would like to express our sympathy and our condolences to the family of the victim.
Chief Johnson spoke with the Calhoun Journal and stressed again that his prayers go out to the family of the victim. He also wanted to commend the work of all the officers involved as well as Piedmont EMS and Fire. “This was a group effort and we always hate when there is a fatality, however all involved worked diligently.”
