Teen Driving Safety Summit Planned for Central Alabama Students

Oxford, AL – WHAT: UR KEYS 2 DRV (Your Keys to Drive)—an interactive, educational day for young drivers funded by State Farm. Up to 300 8th-12th grade students are expected to attend. Students will hear personal stories from speakers impacted by teen driving crashes. In small group sessions, the students will use driving simulators to experience the challenges of driving under the influence. They will also discuss safety-related topics, including the Alabama Graduated Driver License Law, drinking and driving, texting and driving, and other distractions.

WHO: Children’s of Alabama, the Alabama Department of Transportation, State Farm, Drive Safe Alabama, the Alabama Sports Festival Foundation, the Alcohol Beverage Control Board and Safe Kids Alabama.

Keynote speaker—Mike Lutzenkirchen, executive director of the Lutzie 43 Foundation, which he established to honor his son, former Auburn football player Philip Lutzenkirchen, who died in a car crash involving alcohol.

WHEN: Thursday, Oct. 27, 2022, from 9 a.m.-11 a.m.

WHERE:  Oxford Civic Center — 401 McCullars Lane, Oxford, Alabama 36203

WHY: Motor vehicle crashes are the second-leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States. Driver inexperience is a leading contributor to crashes and injuries for teen drivers. The URKeys2DRV coalition of safety organizations is working to reduce this statistic by educating teen drivers about safe driving.
