Pamela J. Laffitte; Democratic Nominee for Secretary of State for Alabama
A Letter to the Editor:
From my Volume I, Issue III,July 06, 2022
Alabama’s Republicans are looking into the potential of moving future Primary Elections from “open” (in which anyone can vote on a particular ballot) to “closed” (which would require voters to register with a political party in order to participate in the primary).
My Response: Through a condensed lens across Alabama, our Nation, and globe, one can envision “Voter Suppression” and we must protect our Right and Freedom to vote within Democracy. Voter Suppression is a designed strategy used to influence the outcome of an election by discouraging or preventing specific groups of people from voting. Since the 2020 elections, many individuals, organizations, etc. are uttering “Voter Integrity” or “Election Integrity”. Both Voter Integrity and Election Integrity are taking a totally different clarity as “Voting Suppression”.
Since the 2020 elections, many individuals, organizations, etc. are uttering “Voter Integrity” or “Election Integrity”. Both Voter Integrity and Election Integrity are taking a totally different clarity as “Voting Suppression”. We’re now witnessing a slight shift of focus from “Voter Suppression” to “Election Subversion”, which is still “Voter Suppression”. It’s said that “Election Subversion” is the new GOP Tactic. Election Subversion is to attempt and prevent the mechanics of elections from operating. Sadly, after Alabama’s Primary Runoff Elections 2022, it is said that in Morgan County, AL, selected Republicans, and a present Alabama State Senator-R are seeking strategies, methods, and plans to change the process and method as to how the Primary Elections operate in the State of Alabama. If the new bill is drafted, passed by legislation, and enacted into law, every voter of Alabama will have to select a political party and register with the Democratic Party, Republican Party, etc. This will be a voter’s registration through political party affiliation, whereas the voter is forced to publicly select a political party. However, in a “Closed Primary” the voters registered with the selected political party are only allowed to cast their vote. In 2020, Alabama ranked #42 with 63.1 % in voter turnout, whereas Minnesota ranked #1 with 80 % voter turnout. Alabama must improve in voters’ engagement. Today, we review our Primary Election 2022 and Primary Runoff Elections 2022 and it’s recorded as a very low voter turnout. It has been researched and collectively annotated since the 2020 Elections, that Alabama joins 9 other states from the Nation as the Nation’s 10 bottom states in low percentage voter turnout.
After Alabama’s Primary Election and Primary Runoff Election 2022, voter turnout was extremely low. If Alabama lawmakers agree to force voters of Alabama to register with one of the political parties as affiliated to cast their vote, there’s a possibility Alabama’s voter turnout will be even lower for those undecided and swing voters. Alabama cannot afford any additional “Election Subversion” or further pathway towards “Voter Suppression”. It has already been predicted, this new wave of “Voter Suppression” and election sabotage will intensify in 2022. Let’s keep in mind, “When a Voter doesn’t cast his/her vote, it allows many laws to be written and enacted into law to suppress one’s voice and vote”.
Alabama’s 2022 Primary Runoff Elections:
Total Ballots Cast: 464,715
Total Registered Voters: 3,647,310
Voter Turnout: 12.74% Counties Reported: 67 of 67 Last Updated: 06/23/2022 12:05:34 PM
Alabama and 18 other states within this Nation, have over 34 laws collectively enacted to restrict selected VOTERS access to the ballot, which is “VOTER SUPPRESSION.” We must protect our RIGHT and FREEDOM to VOTE! Alabama VOTERS must remember: “Your VOTE counts!” “Your VOTE matters!” “Your VOTE is your voice!”
