Birmingham, AL – Weaver, Ranburne currently second in their respective 1A-4A Super Section wrestling championships
Defending state champion Weaver will have three wrestlers vying for sectional championships Saturday after the first day of competition at the AHSAA 1A-4A North Super Sectional Wrestling Championships. The Bearcats go into the final day with 157 points, in second place, 24 points behind leader Ashville. Ohatchee is tied for fifth, while White Plains, Pleasant Valley and Piedmont are 10, 11, 12, respectively.
Undefeated J.D. Johannson (170, 37-0), Dalton Fink (106) and Anthony Usry (182) all will be going after individual titles for the Bearcats. Fink will oppose Ohatchee’s Briley Carter in his championship match. Other Calhoun County wrestlers who will be vying for section titles include White Plains’ Tanner Jarrell (113) and Mason Hahm (120), Ohatchee’s Matthew King (152), Pleasant Valley’s Zeke Curvin (195) and Connor Crump (285), and Piedmont’s ChrisJohn Gurley (220).
In the 1A-4A South Super Section in Montgomery, St. James took a slim lead over Ranburne late in the day. The Bulldogs, led by senior 285-pounder Carson Hall, totaled 146.5 points and trails St. James by four points. Cleburne County is third and Saks is fourth. Wellborn is 15th. Hall moved closer to a third straight state championship winning his first two matches in 34 and 29 seconds, respectively. The Air Force football signee takes a 44-0 record into Saturday’s 285-pound finals with 38 wins by pin, five by forfeit and one match all season that was decided by points.
Wellborn’s Andrew Salter and Saks’ Ramond Pearson will battle it out for the 220 title Saturday. Other local wrestlers vying for individual titles include Saks’ Trent Hopkins (113), Cleburne County’s Austen Mayfield (138) and Bryton Clay (182), and Ranburne’s Curtis Daniel (160) and Zack Buchanan (170) [read more sports stories…]
