Seven area high school basketball players were named finalists for Alabama Sports Writers Association player-of-the year awards, the association announced today. This list includes Ohatchee’s Jorda Crook in Class 3A girls, Ranburne’s Briley Merrill and Pleasant Valley’s Macey Roper in 2A girls, Spring Garden’s Ace Austin in 1A girls, Jacksonville’s John Broom in 4A boys, Piedmont’s Alex Odam in 3A boys and Faith Christian’s Thomas Curlee in 1A boys. Crook, Austin, Broom and Odam are repeat finalists.

State sports writers voted for the ASWA all-state team March 9 and announced the team Sunday. Writers also voted for player-of-year finalists, Super All-State and Mr. and Miss Basketball. Winners, Super All-State and Mr. and Miss Basketball will be named at an April 6 luncheon banquet sponsored by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association. The April 6 banquet will be at the Montgomery Renaissance.
