Weaver, AL – The city of Weaver held their first “Free Day” on a hot Saturday. While the event was the brain child of Weaver Mayor, Jeff Clendenning it turned into a true collaborative city event. Commissioner Terry Howell, the City of Weaver, and the Weaver Lions Club all donated money for the bookbag giveaway. Westwood Baptist Church donated drinks, Cornerstone Fellowship Church donated and balloon animals and glow in the dark necklaces, and First Baptist Church of Weaver donated water and sweat equity in grilling hot dogs. Walmart helped sponsor the event by offering the city discounts on chips, hotdogs, buns, and water. The city also hired a snow cone truck to give away free snow cones. After the kids grabbed a bookbag they could then visit Dustin Merritt and supporters who gave out school supplies.
In addition to the the free items there were also inflatables for the kids to enjoy and the ever popular splash pad. At 8:00 pm the city played the Super Mario Brothers movie and the weather played nice! They mayor really wanted to thank all those that contributed and came out, but wanted to give special thank you to Chief Brian Bunn, the Weaver Fire Department, the Weaver Public Works, the Weaver Police, Councilmembers Tim McRae, Clint Burns, and Terri Summerlin, and Commissioner Terry Howell who MC’ed the event.
The Mayor also wanted to put in a plug for the next Weaver Fever Event on August 12th. There will be four bands starting at 3:00 pm, food trucks, and of course a free movie at 8:00 pm. He invited everyone to make plans now and look for more details!
