Anniston Shooting Leaves One Dead and One in Custody

Anniston, AL – Per the Anniston Police Investigation Division on September 2, 2023, at approximately 5:00 am, officers of the Anniston Police Department responded to a residence in the 1500 block of East 11th. Street in reference to a shooting that occurred.  When they arrived, they found the victim lying inside the residence. The victim was deceased. The victim was identified as James Delaneley Johnson, from Anniston, Alabama.

A suspect was identified, and later located and arrested by Anniston Police Investigators. The suspect was identified as Derrick Jerome Mathews, from Anniston, Alabama.

It is believed the suspect and victim got into an altercation which led to the shooting. The suspect was placed under arrest for Murder and transported to the Calhoun County Jail. A bond has not yet been set.

 This is an ongoing investigation. No other information will be available at this time.
