A Proclamation on Honoring the Victims of the Tragedy in Lewiston, Maine

Washington D.C. – In response to the tragic events that unfolded in Lewiston, Maine, on October 25, 2023, President Joseph R. Biden Jr. has issued a proclamation, directing the immediate lowering of the United States flag to half-staff. This solemn gesture serves as a mark of respect and remembrance for the victims of the senseless acts of violence that occurred on that fateful day.

By virtue of his authority as President of the United States, as conferred by the Constitution and the laws of the country, President Biden’s proclamation calls for the flag of the United States to be flown at half-staff at various locations, including:

1. The White House
2. All public buildings and grounds
3. Military posts and naval stations
4. Naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia
5. Throughout the United States, its Territories, and possessions

The order remains in effect until sunset on Monday, October 30, 2023, signifying a period of national mourning and unity in honor of the victims.

Furthermore, the presidential directive extends the flag-lowering observance to all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad. This encompasses military facilities and naval vessels and stations located outside the United States.
