Jacksonville, AL – In a historic showdown this Saturday, two universities with a unique and feathered mascot will face off for the very first time. The Jacksonville State Gamecocks are set to take on the University of South Carolina Gamecocks in what promises to be an exciting clash on the football field. For fans who can’t make it to Columbia, South Carolina, the game will be broadcast on ESPN-U, ensuring that this momentous occasion is accessible to fans across the nation.

But how did Jacksonville State University become home to the Gamecocks? If it weren’t for the passionate fans and a decision made 77 years ago, the resounding cry at JSU Stadium might be “Go Eagle Owls!” The university’s football legacy dates back to the late 1800s when the team was initially named in honor of a rare predatory bird found near the Arctic Circle – the Eagle Owl.

However, in 1946, a campaign led by devoted fans resulted in a pivotal change. Coach Don Salls, recognizing the need for a mascot with broader appeal, put the decision to a vote. The outcome was unanimous, with the team electing to become the Gamecocks, a change accompanied by the adoption of the school colors of red and white.

The credit for suggesting the name “Gamecocks” goes to E.C. “Baldy” Wilson, a versatile athlete who not only played football but also basketball. The Gamecock, known for its fierce and proud nature, resonated with the team and its supporters.

Wilson shared his perspective on the decision in a 2005 interview with the Anniston Star, saying, “We’d go places and people would say, ‘What is an eagle owl?’ Back in the old days, everybody had a yard full of chickens. They’re pretty and they’re proud. They have a lot of pride, and they’ll fight to defend their turf.”

As Jacksonville State University and the University of South Carolina prepare to face off in their first-ever meeting, the significance of this mascot choice and its unique connection between the two institutions becomes even more apparent. It’s a testament to the rich history and traditions that define these universities, and it adds an extra layer of excitement to what is already a highly anticipated game.
