Washington D.C. – President Joseph R. Biden Jr. has issued a proclamation designating December 7, 2023, as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, marking the 82nd anniversary of the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor. In a solemn declaration, President Biden calls on the nation to honor the memory of the 2,403 service members and civilians who lost their lives in the unprovoked assault that propelled the United States into World War II.

The proclamation recalls the courage and sacrifice of the men and women of the Greatest Generation who faced the horrors of Pearl Harbor with unwavering resolve. Despite the darkness of that moment, their commitment to defending freedom against the forces of fascism became a guiding light for the nation.

President Biden highlights the enduring inspiration drawn from the stories of the Greatest Generation, emphasizing their ultimate courage and commitment, which continue to foster a sense of unity and purpose across the nation. The President stresses the power of resilience and the ability to shape a freer and more just future even in the darkest times.

The proclamation underlines the responsibility to care for service members, veterans, and their families, citing bipartisan support in Congress for initiatives, including welcoming World War II veterans to enroll in Veterans Affairs health care services.

President Biden urges the nation to remember the patriots who perished on December 7, 1941, and those who defended democracy in the days and years that followed. The proclamation encourages Americans to carry forward the mission of forging a better future for humanity, grounded in dignity, opportunity, and security for all.

By virtue of Public Law 103-308, as amended, December 7 is designated as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. President Biden calls on all Americans to reflect on the courage displayed by service members on that fateful day and express sincere thanks and appreciation to the survivors. He further requests all Federal agencies, interested organizations, groups, and individuals to fly the United States flag at half-staff on December 7, 2023, in honor of the American patriots who sacrificed their lives at Pearl Harbor.
