Montgomery, AL –Governor Kay Ivey issued an executive order directing flags across Alabama to be lowered to half-staff in remembrance of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Justice O’Connor passed away on December 1, 2023, at the age of 92.
The flags will be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of Justice O’Connor’s interment, scheduled for Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at which point they will be raised back to full staff.
Governor Ivey’s decision is in accordance with a presidential proclamation, and she emphasized the significance of honoring Justice O’Connor’s legacy. The proclamation calls for flags to be flown at half-staff.
“Sandra Day O’Connor made significant contributions to the nation’s legal system during her tenure on the Supreme Court,” Governor Ivey stated. “In alignment with the presidential proclamation, I am directing flags to be flown at half-staff as a gesture of appreciation for Justice O’Connor’s dedication to justice, equality, and the rule of law.”
Justice O’Connor, nominated by President Ronald Reagan, served on the Supreme Court from 1981 to 2006. Recognized for her pragmatic approach and role as a swing vote on critical cases, she left a lasting impact on the court.
