Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Marine Patrol Division is once again providing its annual Boating Basics and License Courses across the state’s northern and central districts. These free hands-on classes offer citizens invaluable interaction with local ALEA Troopers and vital information regarding safety and regulations in local bodies of water frequently visited by area residents.
Every year, ALEA prioritizes community engagement and safety by offering these informative courses. Participants gain practical knowledge on various boating issues, including navigation, safety equipment, and state regulations. The direct interaction with ALEA Troopers ensures that citizens are equipped with the latest information to navigate Alabama’s waterways safely and responsibly.
Upon completion of the Boating Basics course, participants receive a certificate by mail. Troopers then submit the individual’s information to ALEA’s Driver License Division, which adds the vessel class to the recipient’s Alabama Driver License. However, it’s important to note that it may take up to 10 business days before recipients can access their updated Alabama Driver License online at alabamadl.alea.gov or through their nearest county probate office.

It’s worth noting that children aged 12 and older are eligible for a vessel operator’s license. However, they must be at least 14 years old to operate a vessel alone.
To enroll in the courses, participants are required to pay a one-time application fee of $5 in cash. Additionally, there will be a $36.25 issuance fee for the license.
