Generational talent Jax State MFA student, Conner Gayda, receives prestigious recognitions in graphic design

Jacksonville, AL – Brett Buckner  with the JSU media team first wrote about Conner Gayda. Talent is an enigmatic force, often defying definition or explanation. Some are blessed with an innate creativity that propels them towards artistic endeavors, while others cultivate their skills through relentless dedication and unwavering passion. For Jax State student Conner Gayda, talent is not merely a gift but a culmination of drive, community support, and an unyielding commitment to his craft.

At 25, Gayda is on the brink of graduating with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Visual Communication Design from Jacksonville State University (Jax State). However, his journey is not defined solely by academic milestones but by the recognition and accolades he has garnered for his exceptional work in graphic design.

Gayda’s recent achievements speak volumes about his talent and dedication. Selected as one of only 15 students worldwide for the prestigious 2024 Communication Arts Student Showcase, Gayda’s work will be featured in the international juried publication, Graphis. These accolades, he humbly acknowledges, are a testament not only to his individual efforts but to the supportive community fostered within the College of Arts and Humanities at Jax State.

In a statement resonating with gratitude, Gayda attributes much of his success to the exceptional faculty within the College of Arts and Humanities. “Our design faculty is as good – if not better – than anywhere in the country,” he acknowledges. “They’ve all been super supportive. Any success I’ve accomplished here, they’re a huge part of.”

Gayda’s professors echo his sentiments, emphasizing the significance of his achievements in elevating the reputation of both the MFA program and the College of Arts, Humanities, and Sciences at Jax State. Seth Johnson, Distinguished Professor of Graphic Design, describes Gayda as a “generational talent” whose recognition reflects the dedication of his mentors in nurturing his artistic prowess.

Gayda’s journey into graphic design wasn’t a predetermined path. It was a chance encounter with a photoshop class in high school that ignited his passion for visual storytelling. Inspired by the album covers of Blue Note Records, Gayda found his calling in graphic design, driven by a desire to create art that resonates with others.

As Gayda prepares to embark on the next chapter of his journey, he remains grounded in gratitude and humility. Set to join the Tatum Design studio in Birmingham post-graduation, Gayda reflects on the culmination of his efforts. “All the hard work is paying off,” he remarks, acknowledging the profound impact of his professors in shaping his trajectory.

For those eager to witness Gayda’s artistic brilliance firsthand, his work is showcased on platforms such as Graphis.com and Dribble.com. Moreover, his presentation titled “Typography, Baseball, and the Fight for Civil Rights” at the 2023 Jacksonville State University Student Symposium offers a glimpse into the depth and breadth of his creative vision.

As Conner Gayda prepares to leave his mark on the world of graphic design, his story serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of talent, community, and unwavering determination. In him, we find not just an artist but a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
