Breaking Barriers Jax State's Trailblazing Support for First-Generation Students Shines Through Scholarships and Commitment to Success

Jacksonville, AL – Jacksonville State University has long been recognized for its dedication to supporting first-generation students in their pursuit of higher education. Renowned as the Friendliest Campus in the South, the faculty and staff at Jax State take pride in guiding these students toward success through mentorship and encouragement. However, the university’s commitment to first-generation students extends beyond emotional support—it also includes significant financial assistance.

In the fall of 2023, an impressive 92% of Jax State students who identified as the first in their families to pursue a four-year degree received scholarships to aid their educational journey. Recognizing that financial barriers often hinder the aspirations of first-generation students, Jacksonville State University is steadfast in its mission to alleviate this burden.

Jessica Wiggins, Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management, emphasized the university’s understanding of the pivotal role affordability plays in the college selection process for first-generation students and their families. “Our scholarships are just one way that Jax State is providing support for these students and families,” she affirmed.

The Center for First-generation Student Success, an initiative of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and The Suder Foundation, invited Jax State to join its esteemed First Scholars Network in 2023. This invitation underscored the university’s commitment to enhancing the experiences and advancing the success of first-generation college students.

As a member of the First Scholars Network, Jacksonville State University has developed a comprehensive plan to enhance its support programs for first-generation students. This initiative includes various goals such as establishing methods for gathering information about first-generation students’ needs and experiences, creating a branded marketing campaign to raise awareness of programs and services for these students, and fostering communities to promote a sense of belonging and support.

Josh Robinson, Jax State’s Dean of Students, highlighted the significance of addressing financial stress among first-generation students. “Nationwide data shows that financial burdens are the primary reason first-generation students leave their college or university,” Robinson stated. “We want to change this narrative at the Friendliest Campus in the South!”

With at least one in three students at Jacksonville State University identifying as first-generation college students, the institution’s goal is to alleviate financial stressors so that students can focus wholeheartedly on their educational journey. Through scholarships, support programs, and a commitment to fostering a welcoming environment, Jax State continues to empower first-generation students to achieve their academic aspirations.
