Anniston, AL – A heartfelt Memorial Day ceremony was held at Fort McClellan Post Cemetery, bringing together the community to honor the sacrifices of the nation’s veterans. The event, which began at 10:30 a.m., was a solemn yet celebratory occasion, featuring music, speeches, and traditional military honors.
The ceremony opened with a prelude by the Cheaha Winds Community Band, directed by Jared Ross, who performed the “Kentucky Overture,” setting a reflective tone for the day.
The Master of Ceremonies, Preston Hale, Judge Advocate of American Legion Post 111, welcomed attendees and introduced the event. Chaplain Jon Clark, also from Post 111, delivered the invocation, offering prayers for the fallen heroes and their families.
The Cheaha Winds Community Band performed the “National Emblem March,” adding to the patriotic atmosphere. Herman Watkins from the National Cemetery Administrative Office provided remarks, emphasizing the importance of remembering those who served.
The Color Guard from Post 111 presented the colors, and the Cheaha Winds Band played the National Anthem as the flag was raised to half-staff, a tribute to the solemnity of the day. The Girl Scout Service Units 20108 and 20127 led the Pledge of Allegiance, fostering a sense of unity and patriotism among the attendees.
Ron Bradstreet, a highly decorated veteran with an extensive military and educational career, served as the guest speaker. He shared his experiences and the significance of honoring veterans. Bradstreet’s career highlights include two tours of duty in Vietnam, service in various military police and intelligence roles, and a dedicated post-retirement career in JROTC education.
Amy Moore, accompanied by Connie Moore on piano, performed stirring renditions of “God Bless the U.S.A.” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” evoking deep emotions among the audience. The Cheaha Winds Community Band also performed “Lest We Forget,” ensuring the day’s message of remembrance was poignantly conveyed.
Veterans Angela Orr, Shawn Curry, and Connie Hale from Post 111 conducted the placement of wreaths, a symbolic act of respect and gratitude for the fallen soldiers.
Chaplain Jon Clark provided the benediction, and the Alabama Artillery Group delivered a three-round volley, a traditional military salute to honor the deceased. The ceremony concluded with the playing of “Taps” by Annie Ingram from Bugles Across America, a fitting end to a day of remembrance.
The event was organized with the help of numerous individuals and groups, including the American Legion, the Girl Scouts, and the Cheaha Winds Community Band. Special thanks were extended to Ron Bradstreet for his inspirational speech and to Amy Moore for her moving musical performances.
The ceremony concluded with the distribution of flags on gravesites, inviting families and the public to participate in honoring the veterans buried at Fort McClellan Post Cemetery. This act of remembrance ensured that each soldier’s sacrifice was individually acknowledged.
