Significant Progress Made on Anniston’s Chief Ladiga Trail Extension

Chief Ladiga Trail Progress Update

Anniston, AL – The City of Anniston is thrilled to report significant progress on the extension of the Chief Ladiga Trail, a project spearheaded by B&B Developers. Since the groundbreaking ceremony on April 12, the construction team has made substantial headway in various phases of the project, which promises to enhance the community’s recreational infrastructure.

The initial phase involved clearing trees, brush, and debris within the designated trail limits. This essential groundwork set the stage for the subsequent tasks, including the removal of old bridges. B&B Developers have successfully dismantled bridges at four different sites with minimal impact on the streams and waterways they spanned. Notably, during the removal of Bridge #4, the team also cleared a log jam and debris from Cane Creek, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing and free-flowing waterway.

Additionally, an extra section of Bridge #1 near 4th Street had to be removed due to insufficient support after the primary removal work was completed. The culvert between Blue Mountain Road and M&H Valve has also been eliminated as part of the project. To prevent environmental degradation, erosion control measures have been rigorously implemented throughout the demolition and clearing phases.

As preparation continues for the base and paving stages, B&B Developers have stripped the topsoil from the trail’s surface, revealing the underlying rock from the old railroad bed. The next step involves processing the subgrade, a task scheduled to begin in the coming weeks.

Anniston’s trail extension will add 6.5 miles to the Chief Ladiga Trail, extending its total length to approximately 39.5 miles. Upon completion, the trail will seamlessly connect Anniston’s Multimodal Amtrak Station to Georgia’s Silver Comet Trail, creating the longest paved pedestrian pathway in the United States with a combined length of over 105 miles.

The Chief Ladiga Trail extension is set to become a landmark achievement, offering residents and visitors alike an expansive and scenic route for walking, biking, and other recreational activities. This project not only enhances the local community’s quality of life but also positions Anniston as a key connector in a significant regional trail network.
