Anniston, AL – The City of Anniston is excited to announce significant improvements coming to Michael Tucker Park, home to the Chief Ladiga Trailhead. Thanks to a Federal Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program Grant of $597,520 awarded by Governor Kay Ivey in October 2023, the city is poised to enhance the park’s accessibility and amenities, creating a more enjoyable experience for all visitors.

With new renders and drawings now available, residents and visitors can get a sneak peek at the upcoming transformations. These enhancements are set to make the park not only more user-friendly but also an essential connection point for Anniston’s forthcoming extension of the Chief Ladiga Trail.

Planned Improvements Include:

  • New Restroom and Shower Facility: A modern addition to meet the needs of park visitors and trail users.
  • Expanded Parking with ADA Accessibility: Additional parking spaces designed for accessibility, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the park.
  • Upgraded Infrastructure: New sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and a closed storm sewer system for improved drainage and safety.
  • Enhanced Lighting and Pedestrian Crossing: Better lighting and a designated crossing area to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.

These upgrades align with Anniston’s broader vision to become a premier ecotourism destination in the South. The Chief Ladiga Trail, when fully extended, will become the longest paved pedestrian path in the United States, connecting Anniston to Georgia’s Silver Comet Trail and providing convenient access to train services at the city’s Amtrak station.

Toby Bennington, Anniston’s City Planning & Economic Development Director, emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “Michael Tucker Park is our city’s northern gateway, connecting us with partner communities and counties. The planned enhancements will provide a safe, efficient parking and gathering area, enriching the overall recreational experience.”
