Oxford, AL – Today, the Oxford Police Department Aviation Unit was the host location for a special First Responder Appreciation Event from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at 600 Stanley Merrill Drive. The event, organized by Senator Keith Kelley with the assistance of the Alabama Forestry Association, brought together local law enforcement, emergency personnel, and community members from all over Calhoun County to honor first responders for their dedication and service.
A highlight of the event was the awarding of a $25,000 grant to the Back the Blue Foundation by the Coosa Valley RC&D Council and Alabama Forestry Association. This generous grant aims to support the families of fallen or wounded officers by helping cover educational expenses for their children, as well as providing critical equipment to local law enforcement agencies.
Ciara Turner, Executive Director of Coosa Valley RC&D Council, spoke to the Calhoun Journal about the significance of the grant: “The Alabama Association of RC&D Councils proudly sponsored the Back the Blue Cookouts by awarding the Back the Blue Foundation a $25,000 grant. As the local RC&D Council for Calhoun County, we are grateful for the opportunity to volunteer at these events and give back to those who serve and protect our communities.”
Senator Keith Kelley also shared his appreciation for the first responders in attendance. “I appreciate the assistance from the Alabama Forestry Association in helping me put this event on. This is just a small way to say thank you for the tireless efforts of our first responders to take care of all of us and keep us safe,” said Senator Kelley. He further emphasized the importance of community support for law enforcement: “So many times, you get a bad rap in the media or when out in public, but when people need help, you’re their best friend. We appreciate everything you do.”
During the event, Reverend Grinstead, Oxford Police Department’s chaplain, led a heartfelt blessing over the food and expressed gratitude for the first responders’ work. “Father, I just pray you guide us along. Thank you to this group that’s put this meal together. Thank you for the food. And help us to serve you today,” he prayed.
The cookout, supported by the Alabama Forestry Association and the Coosa Valley RC&D, provided attendees with food and fellowship. The event not only served as a moment of recognition for first responders but also underscored the ongoing community efforts to support and stand behind those who work on the front lines of public safety.
Senator Kelley started the event by encouraging first responders to communicate their needs, saying, “A lot of times, the way we find out what legislation needs to be done is because somebody lets us know through firsthand experience. So please don’t hesitate to reach out.”
The event was a powerful reminder of the vital role that first responders play in keeping communities safe and the ongoing efforts to ensure they receive the support and recognition they deserve.
