Senators Call on DOJ for Action on Non-Citizen Voting Allegations Ahead of 2024 Election

U.S. Senators Katie Britt, Tommy Tuberville, Bill Hagerty Hold DOJ Accountable for Failure to Prosecute Wrongful Voter Registration by Illegal Border Crossers

Washington D.C. – U.S. Senators Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), and Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), alongside several other lawmakers, have raised concerns regarding the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) efforts to prevent non-citizens from registering to vote in federal elections. The group of senators, in a letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, expressed frustration over the DOJ’s failure to respond to a previous inquiry about steps taken to address this issue.

In their letter, the lawmakers stated, “We are deeply concerned by reports of non-citizens registering to vote and voting in federal elections.” They emphasized the potential impact of these actions on the integrity of the U.S. election system, particularly with the 2024 Presidential Election quickly approaching.

The senators had initially requested information from the DOJ in July 2024, but according to the letter, no response has been provided to date. As the election draws near, they have renewed their request for answers by October 16, 2024, urging the DOJ to provide specific details about the prosecution of non-citizens involved in illegal voting and registration activities.

Key questions raised by the lawmakers include the number of non-citizens who have been prosecuted for voting unlawfully and the DOJ’s strategies for detecting and preventing non-citizen voter registration. The letter also asked about collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security and state election officials to address these concerns.

The group of signatories includes 31 senators and 34 representatives, highlighting bipartisan concern for election integrity. With the presidential election less than a month away, the lawmakers are seeking reassurance that appropriate steps will be taken to safeguard the voting process.

The Department of Justice has yet to respond publicly to these renewed inquiries.
