Washington D.C. –
Today, U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) renewed her call for Senate Democrats to pass the bipartisan Laken Riley Act following the start of the trial for the accused killer of Laken Riley in Georgia. Senator Britt, emphasizing public safety, urged for swift action on the bill, which she argues is essential to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“As America watches this trial unfold, I am once again calling on Senate Democrats to pass the bipartisan Laken Riley Act,” Senator Britt stated. She argued that Laken Riley’s death was preventable, adding that “there is no responsibility more important than keeping the American people safe.”
The Laken Riley Act, introduced in the Senate by Senators Britt and Ted Budd (R-N.C.) earlier this year as S.3933, complements H.R. 7511, a similar bill led by Representative Mike Collins (R-Ga.) which passed the House with bipartisan support, 251-170. The legislation seeks to strengthen enforcement against illegal aliens who commit crimes, specifically theft, burglary, larceny, or shoplifting, by requiring Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain these individuals until their removal from the U.S.
A key feature of the proposed act is its provision for states to take legal action against federal officials who fail to enforce immigration laws. Senate Democrats have blocked the bill twice, according to Senator Britt, citing concerns about the impact of current immigration policies on American safety.
As the trial continues, Senator Britt remains committed to advocating for the bill’s passage, aiming to prevent further loss and support what she calls “commonsense legislation” for protecting U.S. communities.
