Anniston, AL – On Tuesday, November 12, the Anniston Public Library invites the community to explore the extraordinary stories of Alabama’s pioneering nurses during World War I. At 2 p.m., Haley Aaron, Registrar at the Alabama Department of Archives and History, will deliver an insightful presentation titled “Alabama’s Nightingales – The Legacy of Alabama’s WWI Nurses.”
Aaron will delve into the lives and bravery of the state’s first generation of professional nurses who served on the frontlines in Italy and France, often under dangerous conditions. These women not only played a crucial role in treating soldiers and civilians affected by the war but also returned to Alabama to care for those struck by the deadly influenza pandemic of 1918. Their service, compassion, and professionalism helped set new standards for the nursing profession, marking a significant moment in Alabama’s history and healthcare legacy.
Attendees will gain an understanding of how these courageous women shaped the future of nursing in Alabama and beyond, illustrating their lasting impact on public health and the professional nursing field. This free event offers a unique opportunity to honor Alabama’s “Nightingales” and recognize their essential contributions during one of the most challenging times in modern history.
