Jacksonville, AL – Jacksonville State University (JSU) head football coach Rich Rodriguez shared his insights in an interview on Wednesday as his team prepares for a pivotal game with significant championship implications. Reflecting on the Gamecocks’ progress and challenges, Rodriguez emphasized a balance between immediate focus and long-term aspirations.
“We’re in a spot now where if we win this game, we can compete for the conference championship,” Rodriguez said. He noted the importance of focusing on the process rather than the potential outcome, encouraging players to stay grounded despite the high stakes. “I’ll mention it again on Friday, and that’ll be it.”
This Saturday, 24 seniors will be honored, a group Rodriguez called “the most unique senior class” he’s coached. The mix of four-year veterans and recent transfer players reflects the evolving nature of college football in the transfer portal era. Rodriguez praised their contributions to JSU’s culture, particularly as the program transitioned from FCS to FBS.
“These guys have bought into our culture and left their mark,” Rodriguez said. “Moving up to Division I and achieving back-to-back bowl game eligibility is no small feat.”
Rodriguez highlighted the national exposure JSU has garnered, with eight games televised on major networks this season. “It’s not just exposure for our program but for the entire school,” he remarked, noting its value in recruiting efforts.
However, challenges persist. The team has faced inconsistency in third-quarter performance and injuries late in the season. Rodriguez remains optimistic, emphasizing the importance of intensity and focus.
Reflecting on his tenure, Rodriguez expressed pride in the program’s rapid growth despite the difficulties of moving to the FBS level. “What our players have done over the last three years just doesn’t happen often,” he said, acknowledging the resilience required to navigate the transition and maintain the team’s culture in a rapidly changing collegiate landscape.
