Calhoun County, AL – Calhoun County Schools (CCS) capped off an extraordinary fall season, achieving major victories in volleyball, football, cross country, cheerleading, and marching band competitions. The district’s student-athletes and musicians showcased exceptional talent and sportsmanship, solidifying CCS as a powerhouse in athletics and the arts.
Historic Volleyball Success
CCS made history with three schools competing in the Alabama Volleyball State Championship in different classifications—a first for the district. Alexandria High School (4A), Ohatchee High School (3A), and Pleasant Valley High School (2A) represented CCS on the state’s biggest stage.
Pleasant Valley emerged as state champions for the second consecutive year, adding another title to their legacy. Superintendent Tony Willis expressed his pride, saying:
“We can’t find any record of any other district in the state who had three teams playing in the volleyball finals in three different classifications. I am so proud of the athletes and all of the coaches who work so closely with each team—not just for their performances but for the exemplary way they represented Calhoun County Schools on and off the court.”
Football Achievements
Alexandria, Ohatchee, Pleasant Valley, and Weaver High School all made it to the football playoffs. For Pleasant Valley, this season was particularly momentous as the Raiders qualified for the playoffs for the first time in 40 years.
Cross Country Excellence
White Plains High School senior Madynn Conn captured her third state title in the 4A Cross Country Championship with a remarkable time of 18:15:48, finishing 46 seconds ahead of the runner-up. The White Plains boys’ cross country team also excelled, finishing second overall.
Cheerleading Recognition
In cheerleading, Pleasant Valley High School secured 7th place in the state’s 2A Game Day category, showcasing their dedication and spirit.
Marching Band Triumphs
Weaver High School’s marching band claimed its third consecutive state championship at the Alabama Marching Band Championships held at Spain Park High School. The Bearcat band swept all categories, earning top honors in:
- Color Guard
- Percussion
- Outstanding Musical Performance
- Outstanding Visual Performance
- Outstanding General Effect
Superintendent Willis praised their achievements. “We couldn’t be prouder of these athletes and musicians. They have shown that Calhoun County Schools is competitive, not only in the classroom, but also in athletics and the arts.” As CCS gears up for the winter sports season, expectations remain high, especially in wrestling, where Weaver High School is the reigning state champion. With over 7,500 students across 7 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 7 high schools, CCS continues to foster excellence in education, athletics, and the arts, embodying its mission to meet the needs of every student.
