Florida Man Identified as Suspect Killed in Rainbow City Police Shooting After Hostage Situation

Investigators identify man killed in showdown with officers

Rainbow City, AL — A Florida man was fatally shot by police on Wednesday after firing at officers during a domestic dispute that escalated into a hostage situation, authorities reported.

Rainbow City police responded to a domestic incident that turned violent, culminating in gunfire. According to a statement released by the department, the suspect fired at officers upon their arrival. Officers returned fire, fatally wounding the man.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is conducting a review of the shooting at the request of Rainbow City police. Once completed, ALEA’s findings will be submitted to the Etowah County District Attorney’s Office for further review.

On Thursday, ALEA identified the deceased as Jamin David Elkins, 46, of Mount Dora, Florida, a city located about 30 miles northwest of Orlando.

Details surrounding the domestic dispute and subsequent hostage situation remain under investigation. Authorities have not disclosed further information about the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
