Oxford Fire Chief Gary Sparks shared heartfelt congratulations to two inductees, Coach Clint McCall and Coach Matt Hicks, both of whom have had a profound impact on wrestling and the Oxford community.
“Coach McCall was my junior high coach and assistant coach on varsity, and later, as the head coach at Oxford, I officiated many of his matches during my 23-year career as an AHSAA official. One thing about Coach McCall—if he came to the table, he was right,” Sparks remarked.
Chief Sparks also reflected on his connection with Coach Hicks, who began his career at Cleburne County High School before leading Oxford’s team to two state championships. Sparks recalled a memorable moment during his officiating career when he ejected Coach Hicks in the finals of a state tournament over a passionate dispute. “We’ve both laughed about it since then,” Sparks shared.
He added, “I couldn’t think of two better people and coaches to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.”
Congratulations to all inductees for their dedication and impact on the sport of wrestling. The wrestling community looks forward to celebrating their legacies at the induction
ceremony.
