Catch of the Week: This week’s Catch of the Week is a testament to how good, old-fashioned investigative work and modern technology can come together to solve a crime.

In May 2024, a residence on Mitchellville Road in Lincoln was burglarized, and several items were taken. At the time of the burglary, the homeowner was out of town, and there appeared to be no immediate leads. However, the responding deputy’s keen eye noticed a cigarette butt near the back porch. After confirming with the homeowner that no one living at the residence smoked, the deputy collected the cigarette butt as evidence. The cigarette butt was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for DNA analysis, and a breakthrough occurred: the DNA matched Dewey Wayne Johnson. With this new lead, investigators located and interviewed Johnson, who ultimately confessed to the crime. Johnson was subsequently arrested and charged with Burglary 3rd Degree. This case highlights the importance of attention to detail in law enforcement and how advancements in forensic technology continue to help bring criminals to justice.
