Calhoun County, AL – The Calhoun County Commission convened on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., with Chairwoman Henderson presiding. Commissioners Wilson, Shears, and Patterson were present, while Commissioner Howell was absent. The meeting featured a range of agenda items, all of which passed unanimously.
Proclamations and Recognitions
The commission issued a Proclamation for Human Trafficking Awareness and Prevention Month, highlighting the global and local impact of human trafficking and urging collective efforts to combat the atrocity. Jessica Smith and Pam Stack of United Way’s Hope United were present to accept the proclamation, which underscored the importance of education, prevention, and survivor support.
Additionally, the commission recognized Shasta Platt, an esteemed employee with over 23 years of service to the county. Beginning as a receptionist, Platt advanced to roles including Accounts Payable Clerk and Absentee Manager. Her dedication, professionalism, and pursuit of higher education were celebrated as she embarks on a new career opportunity.
Old Business
The commission addressed multiple nuisance abatement cases, approving actions for properties across Anniston. Several properties were dismissed from the nuisance list, while invoices for completed abatements at other locations were approved.
New Business
The commission handled several new agenda items:
- Nuisance Declarations: Ten properties across Anniston and Weaver were declared public nuisances.
- Section 5311 Public Transportation Resolution: A resolution committing $84,298 as a non-federal match for the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission’s public transit system was adopted.
- Surplus Property Resolution: A Nikon security camera system from the Sheriff’s Office was declared surplus.
- DataWorks Plus Agreement: An agreement for notification system services at $5,000 plus hourly rates was approved.
- ATIS Elevator Inspection Agreement: An agreement for courthouse elevator inspections at $220 was authorized.
- FY2024 County Rebuild Alabama Annual Report: The commission approved the report documenting $4,848,295 invested in transportation projects. County Engineer Rodney Richardson provided insights into the year’s progress and plans for carrying over delayed projects.
- EMS Study Proposal: The commission approved an agreement with the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama (PARCA) to conduct a study on the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) challenges in Calhoun County.
- Objective: The study aims to compile detailed conversations and feedback from local EMS directors, documenting the issues they face to provide a comprehensive analysis.
- Cost: The study will cost $7,500. The commission authorized the Chair to sign the agreement.
- Concerns: Public input included comments from Mr. Warren, who emphasized the importance of using a qualified organization familiar with EMS operations to avoid previous shortcomings from similar studies.
- Board Appointments: Jennifer Watson was officially appointed to the Transit Advisory Board. Additionally, appointments were made to the DHR Board and Highland Health Systems Board. Two at-large vacancies were filled for the Highland Health Systems Board. Appointments were made as follows:
- Jerry Glover was appointed to the first vacancy.
- Matthew Wade was appointed to the second vacancy.

- Inclement weather led to closures of the Visitor Center and the Oxford Performing Arts Center, postponing the Temptations musical.
- Events such as the ALEAF drawdown in Oxford on Saturday night will continue as planned.
- Exciting trail development projects, including the Chief Ladiga Trail and upcoming mountain biking and horse trails, are underway as part of the state’s 2025 Year of Trails initiative. Heritage Festival- Maxwell also reminded attendees about the 45th Annual Heritage Festival, scheduled for February at the Longleaf Center, led by Georgia Calhoun.
