Montgomery, AL – In response to the impact of Winter Storms Cora and Enzo, the Alabama Business Charitable Trust (ABC Trust) is allocating $250,000 in emergency bill assistance to support Alabamians facing financial hardship due to increased heating costs.
Founded and funded by Alabama Power, the ABC Trust provides annual energy-related assistance, with this emergency allocation supplementing its $1 million in regular annual support. The funds will be distributed through community action agencies across the state and Project Share, a partnership between Alabama Power and the Salvation Army to assist low-income households.
“Alabamians experienced unprecedented weather this month, and unexpected heating costs may be a financial burden to some,” said Staci Brown Brooks, Alabama Power’s Vice President of Charitable Giving and Executive Director of the ABC Trust. “The Trust has offered steady energy-related assistance to low-income families for more than 30 years now. We hope these extra funds will be helpful.”
Residents in counties covered under Governor Kay Ivey’s winter weather emergency declarations in January will be eligible for assistance. The emergency funds can be used toward heating costs such as gas, electric, kerosene, wood, and propane for January 2025.
To qualify, applicants must provide proof of income at or below 250 percent of federal poverty guidelines based on household size. Individuals seeking assistance can contact their local community action agency, while seniors (60 and older) and individuals with disabilities can apply through the Salvation Army by calling (205) 328-2420, Prompt 2.
