Calhoun County, AL – The Calhoun County Board of Education held its monthly meeting on February 20, 2025. The meeting began with recognitions of exemplary students, teachers, and alumni, showcasing the achievements within the school district.
Recognitions
1. Wendy England, Executive Director of Human Resources
• Introduced a diploma option for Alabama public school students who have not completed graduation requirements. This program is in partnership with the Alabama Community Colleges, notably Gadsden State, providing free classes to eligible residents aged 19 and older.
2. Frederick Franklin, Principal of Saks High School
• Congratulated Ms. Aguilar for receiving her high school diploma, emphasizing her perseverance and dedication to education.
3. Barry Russell, TCI
• Announced the TCI Student of the Month, Destiny Griffey from Walter Wellborn High School. Destiny is a senior, active in various school activities, and plans to pursue a career in precision machining at Gadsden State Community College.
4. Coleman Lett, FFA
• Recognized National FFA Week and introduced a proclamation celebrating agricultural education and the contributions of FFA members to the community. He expressed gratitude for the support from the board and highlighted the achievements of FFA chapters in Calhoun County.
5. Volleyball Recognition
• Celebrated the accomplishments of local volleyball players, including Erin Spradley and Lily Henry, who were named to the Super All-State Volleyball Team, along with several MVP recognitions.
6. Indoor Track Championship
• Recognized Ella Paris and Clark Keel as state champions in their respective events, along with Coach Jonathan Nix being awarded 2A Head Coach of the Year.
7. Sleep in Heavenly Peace Program
• Acknowledged the fundraising efforts from the pajama day initiative, which raised $7,483 this year, contributing to the delivery of beds for children in need.

• Net Year-to-Date Income: Approximately $143,600.
• General Fund Revenues: At 27.25%, with property taxes beginning to be collected.
