  • Retail Strategies
    • The retail strategy team toured the town on Monday to begin their planning proces for both retail and downtown strategies. Mayor Smith is optimistic about the possibilities and they will be putting a plan together soon. The company has a 90 day discovery phase where they will do their research and then they attend retail trade shows where they can suggest retailers and locations available for new locations.
  • S&ME Drainage Study
    • Mayor Smith spoke with the owner of the 20 acres adjacent to Miranda Land that were suggested as a location of a retention pond. The owner is agreeable to discussing the plan when the engineers can design a plan. They will also provide a cost estimate to the city within the next week.
  • Juneteenth Holiday
    • The council would like to plan ahead for next year to make this a holiday recognized by the city and have offices closed in recognition.

    • Mayor pleased to see the old grocery store building being torn down on Pelham Road.
    • Tim Smith discusses Digital Technologies for the city’s use. The PD is currently using a customized Digital Detective system for multiple uses. They are able to customize GPS tracking of police vehicles, integrate a new fingerprinting system, and a checklist for monitoring situations out in the community.
    • Mr. Smith also discusses due diligence done as a follow up of the Phishing issues he brought up at the last meeting. He recommends a secure city wide email platform to get all departments using the same system. He recommends Google Business Suite at the basic business level for the overall security and pricing levels at $6 a month per user.
    • Mr. Smith also recommends implementing an online training platform for employees to increase awareness and training in cybersecurity precautions.

  • Public comments for general items.
    • Residents of Cotton Creek ask for clarification about a resolution and a timeline for repairing flooding and drainage issues in the area. Mark Walker asks why city maintenance stopped clearing ditches in the area 2 years ago. He also states that his exposed sewage pipe issue was addressed but the rock and loose gravel solution did not hold up to the rain that they received and it is now exposed again.
  • 17. Council Member Remarks.
    • Councilman Green remarks that a resolution is in progress for the drainage, but unfortunately it takes time to work out the details. Green also thanks Councilwoman Laster for her idea to give out ice cream at the Boys & Girls club over the weekend. Green thanked everyone for their hard work on making the Jax Fest a success and a special thank you to Chief Wood, Jacksonville Police Department and first responders for helping to handle the incident in Weaver while the Jax Fest celebrations were happening.
