Governor Ivey Selects Law Enforcement Candidate Hal Nash to Serve as Chair of the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles

MONTGOMERY, AL – Governor Kay Ivey announced Monday the appointment of Hal Nash as Chair of the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles. Nash currently serves as Chief Corrections Deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and was selected from a list of five nominees provided by a board composed of the Lieutenant Governor, the Speaker of the House, and the President Pro Tempore of the Senate.

The governor’s office cited Nash’s law enforcement background and leadership experience as key factors in the selection. His professional history includes roles with the Jackson County and DeKalb County Sheriff’s Offices, and service on the United States Marshal Service Fugitive Task Force in Huntsville. He also previously worked with the Chattanooga Police Reserve.

Nash expressed gratitude for the appointment and emphasized the responsibility the position carries, noting the importance of balancing public safety with the potential for personal rehabilitation.

In addition to his law enforcement career, Nash has held leadership roles in civic organizations, including as international vice president of the Jaycees and as chairman of the Chattanooga/Hamilton County Air Pollution Control Board and the Jackson County Hospital Authority.

Support for Nash’s appointment came from various local officials. Jackson County Sheriff Rocky Harnen highlighted Nash’s diverse law enforcement experience, and Jackson County District Attorney Jason Pierce described Nash as possessing character, integrity, and the discernment needed for the role.

Governor Ivey also acknowledged outgoing Chair Leigh Gwathney for her service and contributions to reform efforts within the Board.
