Anniston's Leatherwood Students Go “Halfway to Honduras” to Bring Hope to Houston

HOUSTON, TX —13 Salvations and Countless Life-Changing Moments Mark Powerful Mission Trip

Students from Leatherwood Baptist Church in Anniston, AL, stepped into a mission experience this summer unlike any they’d known before. Called “Halfway to Honduras,” the trip took them to Houston, Texas — not just halfway to another country, but all the way into the heart of what it means to serve, worship, and follow God’s call.

Led by Student Minister Michael Webb, the group partnered with the Houston Food Bank and hand-delivered hot meals to homeless individuals living in Tent City and surrounding areas. Yet the most powerful moments of the trip happened outside of any schedule. “This trip was the most impactful thing I have ever been a part of,” Webb shared. “It wasn’t about a schedule or a show — it was about worship, obedience, and letting God move.”

Move He did. With no games, no entertainment, and no structured distractions, students entered into hours of deep worship. The result: 13 salvations and many others answering a call to ministry.

What set this trip apart was the freedom each student had to choose whether or not to step out and serve. Much like their relationship with Christ, the decision to go into the streets of Houston and minister to the homeless was entirely personal — and for many, that choice became life-changing.

One student, who had previously experienced homelessness herself, now stood on the other side — delivering meals, praying with those in need, and sharing her testimony. Another student, once separated from her mother due to addiction, spoke through tears about the restoration of that relationship — and the overwhelming moment when she led a homeless mother to Christ, praying that same healing would come for her family too.

Testimonies poured in from students moved by the experience:

“I finally found my missing piece with my relationship with Christ,” said Jada Griffith. “I finally know what I was called for.”

Libby Smith echoed that transformation: “I realized I was the broken one, and God was calling me to be made whole in Him.”

Nevaeh Foster described the trip’s pace as led by divine purpose: “We were never on our own schedule. We were on God’s schedule.”

Others walked away emboldened to live and speak with more urgency. “STEP OUT, SHARE THE WORD,” said Haley Howard. “If God has called you to do something—GO. DON’T HESITATE. Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Sharing His word, going out of our comfort zone, is the LEAST we can do for Him.”

Caleb Gay added, “God moved in all of us and touched us in some way… I’m so blessed to be able to touch lives in Tent City and help so many homeless people come to know the Lord.”

Olivia Stewart reflected, “No caption could ever describe this experience… truly forever praising Him!”

For Bentley Rae Bean, the mission field felt closer than ever. “Faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains,” she said. “The mission field is all around us.”

And Emily Martin summed it up: “This wasn’t just camp — it was a mission. No games, no schedule… just hours of worship and God’s timing.”

Back in Anniston, the Leatherwood church family covered the team in prayer, offered financial support, and celebrated each moment of impact. As the students return, they carry home more than memories — they bring renewed callings, deeper faith, and a boldness to live for something greater.

Leatherwood’s “Halfway to Honduras” mission trip reminded students that missions doesn’t always require a passport — just a willing heart.
