The case was investigated by the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit following a referral from the Alabama Department of Public Health. Investigators found that between November 2022 and April 2023, Fields used pre-signed prescription pads left by the nursing home’s medical director to send unauthorized prescriptions to the facility’s pharmacy. She then received the narcotics from the pharmacy’s courier and kept them.

Assistant Attorney General Nathan Mays prosecuted the case.
