ANNISTON, AL – Col. Charles A. Moore officially assumed command of Anniston Army Depot on July 16, 2025, replacing Col. Craig A. Daniel in a traditional change of command ceremony held at the eastern Alabama facility.
The ceremony, presided over by Major General Michael B. Laylor, Commanding General of the U.S. Army Tank Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM), marked the arrival of the depot’s 39th commander. The event was attended by local officials, military leaders, and depot employees.
Leadership Transition
Col. Daniel, who served as the depot’s commander for two years, highlighted the facility’s achievements during his tenure. Under his leadership, the depot delivered consistent performance, supporting equipment for Ukraine, modernizing combat systems, and generating over $2 billion in revenue. The outgoing commander praised the depot’s 3,700 employees, calling his assignment “absolutely the best job in my Army career.”
“Today’s about the people,” Daniel said during the ceremony. “It’s 3,700 people day in and day out that have 3,700 different points of view… it’s those people that make Anniston Army Depot, Anniston Army Depot.”
New Commander’s Vision
Col. Moore, who previously served on the U.S. Army Pacific G4 staff, brings extensive logistical experience to the role. Originally commissioned as a Medical Service Corps Officer and environmental engineer, he transferred to the Logistics Corps in 2017. His deployments include service in Kuwait and Afghanistan, earning him the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster and Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster.
In a brief interview following the ceremony, Col. Moore emphasized his priorities for the depot: “Our most valuable resource is the people. All of the artisans, the support personnel that are here at Anniston, just continue to improve their quality of life, continue to improve their experiences as the Army continues to transform. It’s what makes the depot so special.”
Depot’s Strategic Importance
Anniston Army Depot serves as a cornerstone of the Army’s Organic Industrial Base, spanning 15,000 acres and employing over 3,700 people. The facility specializes in maintaining combat vehicles, including M1 Abrams tanks and Stryker vehicles, while also supporting small arms weaponry and locomotive maintenance.
General Laylor emphasized the depot’s global impact during the ceremony, noting its support for military operations worldwide. “There’s no better organization in TACOM delivering performance to promise every month than Anniston Army Depot,” he stated.
The facility recently received over $300 million in additional funding for FY26 to support material readiness for four more brigades, reflecting the Army’s confidence in the depot’s capabilities.
Community Impact
The depot serves as one of eastern Alabama’s largest employers and maintains strong ties with the local community. During the ceremony, several Alabama state representatives and local officials were recognized for their continued support of the installation.
Col. Moore, who is married with four children, expressed excitement about returning to the South. His family, including his wife Allison and their children, will be joining him at the depot once their daughter finishes supporting her team in the Hawaii State Swimming Championship.
The change of command ceremony concluded with the traditional passing of the colors, symbolizing the transfer of authority and responsibility from the outgoing to the incoming commander. Col. Moore’s assumption of command continues Anniston Army Depot’s legacy of supporting America’s warfighters with quality maintenance and logistics services.
