Calhoun County, AL – The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to an increase in reports of phone scams in which callers impersonate law enforcement officers, government agencies, or financial institutions in an attempt to steal money or personal information.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the scammers often claim that the victim has outstanding warrants, unpaid fines, or missed jury duty, then demand payment through methods such as Green Dot cards, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. Officials are reminding the public that no legitimate institution or government agency will ever request payment in this manner.

“The Sheriff’s Office will virtually never call you about a warrant, jury duty, or anything else,” the agency stated. “If you ever receive a call like this — even if the caller ID appears to show our number — hang up immediately and contact us directly.”

Officials emphasize that scammers often use caller ID spoofing to make their calls appear legitimate. This technology allows criminals to display a local or official number to trick victims into believing the call is real.

Residents are urged to remain cautious and share this information with friends and family, particularly elderly relatives who are often targeted in such schemes.

Anyone who has received a suspicious call or believes they may have been a victim of a scam should report it immediately to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
