Jacksonville, AL – Jacksonville State University is honoring the memory of Mr. Bob Kennamer, Trustee Emeritus, alumnus, and one of the institution’s most dedicated lifelong supporters. Mr. Kennamer passed away Sunday morning, leaving behind a legacy defined by service, leadership, and steadfast commitment to the university he supported for nearly 70 years.
Mr. Kennamer began his JSU journey in 1955, enrolling at what was then Jacksonville State Teachers College. As a student, he became a prominent campus leader, serving as both Vice President and President of the Student Government Association and joining Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. During his time as SGA President, he led a fundraising initiative that successfully re-established the university’s baseball program, securing necessary equipment for Coach Frank Lovrich and his players. He graduated in 1958 with a degree in business administration and later became the university’s first single male dorm director while starting graduate studies.
“Bob Kennamer truly loved Jacksonville State. You could see it in the way he supported our students, our programs, and the people who make this place special,” said Jax State President Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr. “He devoted his life to serving this university and the people who make it special. For decades, he gave his time, his energy, and his wisdom to help guide Jax State through times of challenge and times of tremendous growth. To me, he wasn’t just a trusted leader—he was a dear friend. The impact of his service will be felt for generations, and we are a better university because of the life he lived.”
After establishing a successful career in insurance and real estate development, Mr. Kennamer continued his longstanding service to JSU. In 1980, he was appointed to the Jacksonville State University Board of Trustees, where he served for more than 26 years. His leadership helped guide the university through periods of transition and expansion. He was also a founding member of the JSU Foundation Board and served on the SouthTrust Bank Board of Directors. Even after being named Trustee Emeritus, his insight and guidance remained significant to the university community.
Beyond his official roles, Mr. Kennamer remained actively involved in campus life. He and his late wife, Lou, were instrumental in supporting major university initiatives and expanding opportunities for students. Their contributions were honored through the naming of Bob and Lou Kennamer Hall, and in 2006, Mr. Kennamer received an honorary doctorate from Jacksonville State University. In 2009, Jax State Athletics presented the couple with the Jimmy Bryan Award for their longstanding support of Gamecock student-athletes. Mr. Kennamer was also recognized as part of the university’s Lifetime Leaders Society.
While widely respected for his leadership, Mr. Kennamer is equally remembered for his kindness, loyalty, and genuine care for others. Countless students, staff, faculty, coaches, and alumni benefited from his encouragement and example.
Jacksonville State University extends its deepest sympathies to all who were touched by Mr. Kennamer’s life and service. His legacy continues to shape the institution and will inspire future generations of Gamecocks.
A Celebration of Life and Reunion of Friends will be held Tuesday, December 9, at 3 p.m. at the Stone Center on the Jacksonville State University campus.
