Alabama Legislature Passes HB 67 to Limit Public Access to Voter Phone Numbers

Secretary of State Wes Allen Applauds Alabama Legislature’s Final Passage of HB 67

Montgomery, AL — Wes Allen is commending the Alabama Legislature following the passage of House Bill 67, a measure aimed at balancing voter data accessibility with increased privacy protections.

The legislation, sponsored by Jamie Kiel and carried in the Senate by Matt Woods, introduces changes to how voter information is distributed and accessed across the state.

Under current law, phone numbers of individual voters may be included in the statewide voter list, which is available for purchase. HB 67 removes the automatic inclusion of voter phone numbers from that list, a change supporters say will help reduce unwanted telemarketing and spam calls targeting Alabama residents.

In addition to privacy protections, the bill also addresses accessibility concerns by placing a cap on the cost of obtaining the statewide voter list. Lawmakers say this adjustment is intended to make voter data more affordable for candidates, campaigns, and organizations that use the information for lawful purposes such as outreach and civic engagement.

Allen expressed support for the measure, noting that limiting access to personal contact information is an important step for voter protection. He also emphasized that the legislation maintains appropriate access to voter data for legitimate use while strengthening safeguards for individuals.

The Secretary of State also acknowledged the efforts of Kiel and Woods in advancing the bill through both chambers of the Legislature. The measure now moves forward in the legislative process and is expected to be considered for final approval and signature into law.
