Alabama Secretary of State Announces Key Deadlines for May 19 Primary Election

MONTGOMERY, ALWes Allen is reminding Alabama voters of several important deadlines and requirements ahead of the state’s Primary Election scheduled for May 19, 2026.

According to the Secretary of State’s Office, voters planning to cast absentee ballots should take note of multiple submission deadlines. Mail-in absentee ballot applications must be received by county absentee election managers no later than Tuesday, May 12, 2026. For those submitting applications in person, the deadline is Thursday, May 14, 2026.

Completed absentee ballots returned in person must be delivered to the county absentee election manager by the close of business on May 18, 2026, the day before the election. Ballots returned by mail must be received by noon on Election Day, May 19, 2026, to be counted. Officials recommend mailing absentee applications and ballots at least two weeks before their respective deadlines to ensure timely delivery.

In addition to absentee voting deadlines, Allen emphasized that the deadline to register to vote for the upcoming primary is Monday, May 4, 2026. Eligible residents can register online or submit a paper application to their local Board of Registrars.

“The right of eligible United States citizens to vote in fair and secure elections is one of the hallmarks of our constitutional republic,” Allen said. “I encourage all eligible Alabamians to register to vote or verify their voter registration status ahead of the May 19 Primary Election.”

To be eligible to vote in Alabama, individuals must be U.S. citizens, residents of Alabama, and at least 18 years old on or before Election Day. Individuals must also not be disqualified due to certain felony convictions or a court ruling of mental incompetence.

On Election Day, polling locations across the state will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters are required to present a valid form of photo identification when voting either in person or by absentee ballot.

State officials also noted that cumulative election results will be made available through the Secretary of State’s website following the election.

Allen also expressed appreciation for local election officials across Alabama, recognizing their efforts to ensure a fair, secure, and transparent election process.
