Ohatchee, AL – The Town of Ohatchee Council approved plans for a community-wide Independence Day celebration, along with additional agenda items, during a recent meeting focused on upcoming events and community engagement.
Council members voted to hold a “250-year American celebration” on July 3 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the city ball fields, with an alternate date identified in case of inclement weather. The event is expected to include fireworks, live music, and a community cookout, with council members and local officials potentially preparing food for attendees.
A key component of the event will be the recognition of local veterans. Council members discussed gathering names from area organizations, including the American Legion and other veteran groups, to ensure those who have served are acknowledged during the celebration. The recognition effort may also extend to high school students who have committed to military service.
Discussions also included potential involvement from local schools, community groups, and organizations such as color guards or scouts to participate in patriotic elements of the event. Ideas ranged from live performances to ceremonial presentations, with an emphasis on community-wide participation.
In addition to event planning, the council approved a $500 sponsorship for the broadcast of an upcoming girls’ softball tournament at Ohatchee High School. The tournament, scheduled for May 2, will be covered by a regional network, with the sponsorship supporting broadcast efforts rather than direct funding to the school.
The council also discussed applying for grant funding tied to the national 250th anniversary celebration, though members noted time constraints and funding limitations on how the grant could be used.
The meeting concluded with approval of the event details and sponsorship, with additional planning and coordination expected to continue in the coming weeks as organizers finalize logistics for the July celebration.
